Chamber announces
Educated Voter forums
The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce has announced
a series of Educated Voter forums to take place in
September and October as part of the run-up to the
general election in November. There will be
five forums. Two of the forums will deal with
the proposed penny sales tax for county capital
projects. The others will features county
council candidates, Camden city council candidates
and the candidates for Kershaw County sheriff.
Keeping up with student
assignments
Parents of Kershaw county students now have an easy
way to keep up with their children's school
assignments by signing up for the district's E-Chalk
parents alerts. Mary Anne Byrd, director of
communications for the district says it's great way
to have detailed information sent directly from a
teacher in each day's e-mail.
County Council nixes
sewer rate caps
A proposal to establish a maximum residential usage
rate for customers of the Kershaw County Sewer
System failed at last week's meeting of Kershaw
County Council amid confusion involving amendments
to the motion and just what motion was on the table.
The measure to limit the fee was made by councilman
Jimmy Jones, who said under the current fee
structure the county is stealing money from
customers of the sewer system. Council
chairman Max Ford responded by saying that the use
of the word "stealing" by Jones was "unfortunate"
and that Kershaw county's sewer rates were not
excessive compared to other communities.
Council vice-chairman Sammie Tucker, Jr.,
pointed out that the county sewer system was formed
to promote economic growth and had resulted in
the creation of at least 55 jobs in recent years.
Jones said that was not true calling Tucker's
remarks "propaganda." After a period of
confusion concerning which motion was on the table
the original proposal was defeated 4 to 2.
