Chamber members hear
lawmakers
This past Friday morning the
membership of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce
heard from lawmakers during the chamber's annual
legislative breakfast. Among those speaking were
Governor Mark Sanford, Congressman John Spratt and
State Senators Vincent Sheheen and Joel Lourie as
well as State Representatives Laurie Slade
Funderburk and Anton Gunn. Most of the
speakers calling for reform of state government and
telling the audience that more spending cuts could
be in the offing.
School Board passes
redistricting
The Kershaw County School
Board Tuesday evening voted to redistrict West
Wateree and Camden elementary school students for
the next school year while also requesting that the
district administration work at developing a
district wide school choice plan for elementary
schools for the 2011-12 school year. Rising
first through fifth graders at the schools will be
allowed to continue going to the same school if
parents provide transporation.
Elgin Town Council
discusses blue laws
Elgin town councilmen
discussed the town's blue laws last week
but took no action. Attorney John Fantry told
councilmen that council would need to pass an
ordinance putting a question regarding the Sunday
sale of alcohol on the ballot for Elgin voters to
decide.

Earlier in the year, fifth graders at Wateree proved
they were smarter than the superintendent when they
beat him in the county spelling bee. So..... these
fifth graders challenged the school board to a
vocabulary test. Board members tried to match
vocabulary words with 5th grades costumes of
definitions. Needless to say, WES's 5th graders
proved they were smarter than the board members too! |
